Many stories about the Northern Lights in North American civilizations say the lights are the ghosts of deceased ancestors.
Some also believed the lights were the spirits of those they had slain. However, not all North American myths viewed the Northern Lights so positively.
The spirits of the dead are a common theme in the mystical traditions surrounding the aurora. The Inuit call the aurora “aksarnirq” and believe the spirits of the dead dance there.
The Eskimo tribes, driven by their beliefs, considered using the Aurora to contact their departed loved ones. The Cree people had a strong belief in the “cycle of life.” The dogs believed that the lights were a way to make contact with their ancestors and that their barking at them was a communication from their long-lost partners.
This hearty meat and potato stew is a staple of Norwegian culture. It is a comfort dish and can be prepared in many ways depending on the region.
This dried fish is like jerky made from other meats. It is eaten as a snack with salted butter.
Suaasat is a traditional Greenlandic soup. It is made with potatoes, onions, and meat from local animals, including reindeer and seabirds.
This dish is sautéed reindeer served with potatoes and lingonberry preserves.
Travelling to northern lights in the months of November to February will be a great idea as it offers the darkest nights and the evenings are longest, and you get maximum time for sky gazing. From 8:30pm to 2 a.m., the lights are strongest. But still, the best time for sighting is in the middle of the night, just before 12:00am. When you try to see the sky with your naked eyes, the aurora won’t be the same as the photographs because cameras are more sensitive and they capture more exposures than the naked human eye.
What camera captures will be great, and it is not possible to capture that Beauty with our human eye. These lights are visible in different shades such as yellow, red, blue, violet, and green . The patterns and appearance of the lights are in different forms, some may appear as scattered clouds of light , whereas some may appear as patches, rippling curtains, streamers, and some may also be seen as shooting rays of light in the sky with the glow of eerie.
Solar flares can cause intense Northern Lights. Coronal mass ejections (CMEs), a form of solar flare, are sought after by Northern Lights viewers and may trigger geomagnetic storms that create strong Northern Lights even at lower latitudes.
Space weather can affect the area between Earth and the sun, resulting in aurora displays. Solar activity, including solar flares and coronal mass ejections, can trigger these events. Even less intense phenomena, like fast solar wind streams from coronal holes, can create conditions for active auroras.
When we talk about the weather and the clothes that we should carry, a thermal base layer is a good choice. Additionally, we can carry woolen clothes. We should not carry cotton clothes as they become very cool when they get wet. Clothes should be such that they strengthen the air and hold the humidity. Also, it regulates the heat insulation from our body. Best example would be a woolen sweater or shirt, a thermal sweater, or a fleece.
Skirts or dresses, sweaters, and slacks would be best for casual wear for women, whereas smart casual pants and a shirt would be a great choice for men. It is not allowed to carry full wear, shorts, or baseball caps to the dining room. You will have to wear your shoes every time. Wearing of jeans will be permitted, but they should not be flared jeans, nor should they contain any holes.
When we talk about travelling, State Express Global Voyages provides you with numerous discounts and special offers to make your trip memorable. Things to keep in mind while going for a trip. It is essential for us to carry our boots, which will help us while hiking, ice climbing, and caving. Apart from this, it is also important for us to carry a waterproof jacket and a pair of trousers. This makes you ready for your trip to the northern lights. Not only this, but also it is important for you to carry good quality gloves, woolen socks, and a warm hat.
If we talk about the cost of the trip. On a twin-sharing basis, we can say INR 1.9 lakh will be the cost of travelling to the Northern Lights for an individual.
The first and foremost thing that you must take with you is thermals . Apart from all the winter clothing, this will provide you with extra warmth and make you feel comfortable.
As the thin layers of thermals will provide you with warmth, you must keep hoodies and thick jumpers that can be used for day-to-day clothing. The number of thermals that you will carry will depend on the season when you are visiting the northern lights, whether you are visiting in autumn, spring, or winter. One or two thermal will be best for you to carry. If you travel in spring or autumn, you may need some more fresh clothes to wear.

Norway, Finland, and Iceland are the top picks. You can also spot auroras in Sweden, Canada, and Alaska. Our itineraries focus on high-latitude “auroral oval” zones like Tromsø (Norway), Finnish Lapland (Rovaniemi/Levi), and Iceland (Reykjavik + South/North Iceland).
Classic Iceland Tour (6D/5N): ₹2,00,000 pp
Iceland Self-Drive (8D/7N): ₹2,20,000 pp
Deluxe Iceland Tour (8D/7N): ₹2,20,000 pp
Immersive Iceland Tour (10D/9N): ₹2,70,000 pp
Scandinavia Northern Lights Group Tour (10D/9N): ₹4,74,900 pp
Generally September to March on clear, dark nights. Peak viewing is during the long winter nights (Oct–Feb), but strong solar activity can make September/March excellent too.
Dark, cloudless skies away from light pollution. Low moonlight helps contrast. Cold, stable nights in the Arctic often give the best chances.
Thermal base layers, fleece/down mid-layer, waterproof/windproof shell, insulated boots, wool socks, warm hat, gloves/mittens, neck gaiter. Also carry a headlamp, power bank, hand warmers, and a thermos.
Both. Iceland Self-Drive routes offer flexibility (e.g., Reykjavik–Borgarnes–Klaustur–Hella). Guided/group departures in Scandinavia add expert aurora hunting, safety, and logistics support.
Dog sledding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, ice fishing, reindeer/husky safaris, cross-country skiing, ice hotels, blue-ice cave tours (Iceland), geothermal spa time (e.g., Blue Lagoon/Retreat), and Arctic cruises (Havila) in Norway.
No one can guarantee sightings—auroras depend on solar activity and clear skies. We maximise odds with multi-night stays in high-latitude zones and flexible evening chases; group tours and local guides further improve chances.
Fixed-date, escorted itineraries bundle hotels, transfers, key activities, and aurora hunts with an expert tour leader. Example: Scandinavia Northern Lights Group Tour (10D/9N) from ₹4,74,900 pp (Stockholm–Rovaniemi–Levi–Tromsø–Havila Cruise–Oslo).
Entry: Classic Iceland (6D/5N) ~₹2,00,000 pp
Balanced: Self-Drive/Deluxe Iceland (8D/7N) ~₹2,20,000 pp
Deeper: Immersive Iceland (10D/9N) ~₹2,70,000 pp
Premium/Group: Scandinavia (9–11 days) with Tromsø, Lapland & Havila cruise ~₹4,44,900–₹4,74,900 pp. Share dates, comfort level, and activities; we’ll customise.
